Consultant Hematologist

I am a physician and hematologist with extensive clinical, academic, and teaching experience in the field of Hematology. Over the course of my professional career, I have remained deeply committed to the diagnosis and management of blood disorders, with a particular interest in thalassemia, transfusion medicine, hemoglobinopathies, and disorders of red blood cells.

My Career

I graduated from King Edward Medical College and also completed MD Hematology degree from King Edward Medical University. I have an extensive diagnostic, clinical and academic experience in the field of Hematology. I served as Head of the Department of Clinical Laboratories, Mayo Hospital and Assistant Professor of Pathology at King Edward Medical University Lahore, where I was involved in teaching, research and training of the undergraduate and postgraduate medical students and contributed significantly to the advancement of hematology and laboratory medicine.

I have also served as Director Institute of Blood Transfusion Services (IBTS) Punjab where I implemented and practiced safe blood transfusion practices throughout Punjab. I have special interest in inherited hemoglobin disorders especially thalassemia and carries enough experience in safe blood transfusion practices, laboratory quality assurance and evidence-based patient care.

Currently, I am working as Consultant pathologist, HOD Blood Bank & Thalassemia Center at Al-Khidmat Teaching Hospital, Mansoorah Lahore. I have been involved in developing a Comprehensive Thalassemia Center at Al-Khidmat Teaching Hospital Mansoorah, with the vision of providing organised, multidisciplinary and patient centered care to Thalassemia patients.

My career has combined patient care, medical education, laboratory medicine, academic teaching, and professional leadership. .

Although I am now retired from my formal academic position, I continue to remain professionally active and involved in clinical hematology, medical education, and healthcare development.

My Expertise in Hematology

My clinical interest in the hematological disorders includes:

Thalassemia and other hemoglobinopathies

Anemia and its various causes
Iron deficiency and iron overload
Transfusion dependent thalassemia
Hemolytic anemias
Red blood cell disorders
Bone marrow and hematological disorders
Coagulation and bleeding disorders
Interpretation of hematological investigations
Blood transfusion and transfusion-related issues
Laboratory diagnosis of hematological diseases

I believe that accurate diagnosis is the foundation of appropriate treatment. I therefore place considerable importance on correlating the patient's clinical presentation with the CBC, peripheral blood film, iron studies, hemoglobin analysis, HPLC/electrophoresis, transfusion history, and other relevant laboratory investigations.

My Special Interest: Thalassemia

Thalassemia has become one of the most important areas of my professional interest and contribution.

Over the years, I have developed a particular interest in the comprehensive management of patients with transfusion dependent β-thalassemia, including regular blood transfusion, iron chelation, monitoring of iron overload, prevention and management of complications, and long term multidisciplinary care.

I strongly believe that thalassemia care should go beyond simply providing regular blood transfusions. Patients require lifelong, structured follow-up involving:

Safe and adequate transfusion, effective iron chelation monitoring of iron overload prevention of complications, psychosocial support, genetic counseling and family education.

My approach is therefore based on comprehensive and patient-centered care.

I am particularly interested in improving awareness about thalassemia among doctors, patients, parents, healthcare workers, and the general public. In countries such as Pakistan, where thalassemia represents a major public-health challenge, I believe that prevention, carrier detection, premarital screening, genetic counseling, and early diagnosis are as important as treatment.

Establishing a Thalassemia Centre

One of my important ongoing professional initiatives has been my involvement in the development of a dedicated thalassemia centre at Alkhidmat Teaching Hospital, Mansoorah, Lahore, where every thalassemia patient receive the following services:

Regular and safe blood transfusion
Blood-group and comaptibility testing
Iron chelation therapy
Monitoring of ferritin and iron overload
Management of transfusion reactions
Patient and family counseling
Genetic counseling
Education regarding disease prevention

I consider the development of comprehensive thalassemia services to be an important part of my continuing professional contribution.

My Approach to Patient Care

I believe that every patient is more than a laboratory report or a diagnosis.

My approach to hematology is based on careful history taking, clinical examination, appropriate investigations, accurate diagnosis, management and long-term follow up.

I try to explain medical conditions to patients and their families in language that they can understand. Particularly in chronic diseases such as thalassemia. I believe that educating the patient and family is an essential component of treatment.

My objective is not simply to treat a blood disorder but to help patients achieve the best possible quality of life while minimizing treatment-related complications.

Academic and Teaching Experience

My medical career has been crevolved around Laboratory Medicine and Pathology.

During my tenure at King Edward Medical University, and Mayo Hospital, I gain the experience in Pathology & Hematology and got the opportunity to teach & train medical students, postgraduate trainees and healthcare professionals.

Teaching has always been an important part of my professional identity. I believe that medical knowledge should not remain confined to specialists, it should be communicated clearly to the students, general practitioners, laboratory professionals and patients.

Even after retirement from formal academic service, I continue to participate in medical education through lectures, presentations, professional discussions, educational material and clinical guidance at AlKiidmat Teaching Hospital Mansoorah, Lahore.

My Interest in Transfusion Medicine

Safe transfusion is an essential part of modern hematology, especially in thalassemia patients and other transfusion dependent conditions.

I believe in improving the transfusion practices which include:

Appropriate selection of blood components
Blood grouping and compatibility testing
Crossmatching
Leukoreduced blood components
Prevention of alloimmunization
Recognition and management of transfusion reactions
Blood-bank quality and safety
Hemovigilance
Safe blood administration
Prevention of transfusion transmitted infections (TTIs)

I believe that every transfusion should be considered a clinical intervention that requires appropriate indication, compatibility, monitoring, documentation and follow up.

Medical Education and Public Awareness

A significant part of my professional philosophy is based on the belief that knowledge can prevent disease.

This is particularly relevant to thalassemia. Thousands of families are affected by this inherited disorder, yet much of the suffering can potentially be reduced through appropriate carrier screening, genetic counseling, prenatal diagnosis and informed reproductive decisions.

I therefore support greater public awareness regarding:
